Becoming a Pilot in Belgium: Why a Helicopter Is the Smartest Choice
You want to become a pilot. But what kind of pilot? Airplane or helicopter? It’s a question many people ask themselves—and one to which they often get the wrong answer, because helicopter flying is unfairly portrayed as a niche or unattainable field. That’s not true. Helicopter vs. airplane: what’s the difference?
Both licenses require serious commitment, but they open different doors.
With a pilot’s license for airplanes, you fly from airport to airport. With a helicopter pilot’s license, you can fly literally anywhere: you land in a field, on a rooftop, or on a platform at sea. That versatility makes helicopter pilots in demand for applications that are simply not possible for airplanes. Think of Search and Rescue, HEMS (helicopter medical evacuation), offshore operations, mountain flying, aerial photography, and VIP transport.
Choosing a helicopter training program means choosing more freedom, more applications, and a profile that is in high demand on the job market.
What do you need to get started?
Less than you think. For a PPL(H) (the private pilot license for helicopter pilots), you don’t need any special prior education. No science, no technical background, no specific diploma. What you need:
- A minimum age of 16 for your first solo flight, 17 for the license itself
- A Class 2 medical examination from a certified aviation physician
- The motivation to take both theory and practice seriously
That’s the starting point. You’ll learn the rest along the way.
What does the training program look like?
A PPL(H) training program at Toran consists of theory and practice, which are best taken in parallel.
Theory
The theoretical training covers 7 subjects: flight principles, navigation, meteorology, radio communication, regulations, general helicopter knowledge, and human performance. Classes are taught in small groups of 5 to 10 students, ensuring an efficient learning curve and personalized guidance.
You set your own pace: the standard program runs over 10 months with one class per week, while the intensive program condenses everything into 4 months. Those who prefer to study at their own pace can opt for distance learning.
Practical Training
A minimum of 45 flight hours on a Guimbal Cabri G2 or Robinson R44, supervised by a Toran instructor. Someone is available 7 days a week from Kortrijk, Antwerp, Knokke, or Sint-Truiden. You’ll work step by step from the basics to advanced maneuvers and eventually to solo navigation flights.
How long does it take?
On average, one year, but it’s achievable in 6 months if you study intensively and fly regularly. There’s no deadline—you set the pace.
And after the PPL(H)?
The private pilot license is a milestone for those who see flying as a hobby, and a starting point for those who want to go further. From the PPL(H), there are several paths:
CPL(H) – the commercial pilot license. This allows you to work as a professional pilot. Toran guides ambitious students toward this license through carefully selected international partner schools, with Toran remaining your primary point of contact from start to finish.
Additional ratings: night VFR, mountain flying, new aircraft types, Flight Instructor. Once you’ve flown, you’ll always want more.
