How much does helicopter training cost? Everything you need to know about prices at Toran Academy

For many people, flying is a lifelong dream. At Toran, we believe in complete transparency, including when it comes to pricing. In this article, we break it all down: what helicopter training costs, what’s included, and what additional costs you can expect.

PPL(H): Private Pilot License for Recreational Flying

The PPL(H) (Private Pilot License for helicopters) is the starting point for anyone who wants to learn to fly as a hobby or as a first step toward a professional career. You don’t need any special prior training to get started.

What does the training involve?

The PPL(H) consists of two main parts: theory and practice.

For the theoretical part, you’ll take seven exams covering subjects such as flight principles, navigation, meteorology, radio communication, regulations, and human performance. You can choose between three tracks:

• Intensive track: 4 months, 3 lessons per week, individual
• Standard track: 10 months, 1 class per week from 7:00 PM to 10:00 PM
• Distance learning: at your own pace, with a minimum of 10 hours of supervised theory lessons

For the practical portion, you will fly at least 45 hours on a Robinson R44 or Guimbal Cabri G2, supervised by one of Toran’s experienced instructors. An instructor is available 7 days a week. You may fly solo starting at age 16 and obtain your license starting at age 17.

PPL(H) Rates

Registration and materials: one-time fee of €1,300

This includes:

• Administration and practical file, including 3 progress checks
• Theory courses and study materials for all 9 subjects
• Access to the practice platform (database of exam questions)
• Communication with the Civil Aviation Authority
• Pooley’s practical manual (for reference)
• Pilot Operating Handbook for R44 and Cabri G2
• VFR charts for Belgium and the Netherlands
• Toran app (first year included, then €99 per year)
• Access to Toran Café and Toran Travels
• Toran Pet, Polo shirt, and notepad

Theory class options

• Theory class credit (classroom/group): €25 per hour
• Theory class credit (private): €75 per hour

The basic training program includes 100 hours of theory instruction.

Practical lessons

• Guimbal Cabri G2: €630 per hour of engine time
• Robinson R44: €730 per hour of engine time

Flight hours include:

• Helicopter rental
• Instructor fee
• Instructor travel allowance
• Pre-flight briefings
• Landing fees
• Post-flight debriefings
• Comprehensive insurance
• Fuel at the home base
• Fuel taxes
• Technical maintenance
• Use of facilities

Additional costs outside of Toran (estimated prices)

These are costs unrelated to Toran and dependent on external parties:

• Occasional landing fees when traveling: approx. €30 – €60 per landing
• Class 2 medical examination: €200 – €400 per examination
• Practical exam (examiner fee): €300 – €500 per exam
• Theory exams: €116 – €150 per exam
• English Language Proficiency (ELP): €200 per exam
• Unforeseen fuel surcharge: Depends on market prices

Theory exams can be taken at CBR in the Netherlands, DGLV in Brussels, or Austrocontrol in Antwerp.

There are three levels for the ELP: Level 4 is valid for 4 years, Level 5 is valid for 6 years, and Level 6 has unlimited validity.

CPL(H): Commercial Pilot License

Unlike the PPL(H), a Commercial Pilot License (CPL(H)) offers the opportunity to turn your passion into a career. A CPL(H) opens up a world of professional opportunities: from Search and Rescue, mountain flying, and firefighting to aerial photography, VIP transport, HEMS, and Flight Instructor.

Although Toran does not yet offer CPL(H) training programs itself, they guide ambitious pilots from start to finish toward a professional helicopter career. This is done in close collaboration with carefully selected international partner schools where this training is conducted.

ATPL(H): Airline Transport Pilot License

The Airline Transport Pilot License ATPL(H) is the highest license in the helicopter industry and opens the door to major commercial operations, offshore flights, and captain positions. For the ATPL(H) program as well, Toran collaborates with international partner schools and remains your dedicated point of contact throughout the entire process, from preparation to career guidance after the program.

What is included in the flight hours?

A frequently asked question is what exactly is included in the hourly rates. At Toran, this is comprehensive: each flight hour includes helicopter rental, instructor fees (including travel expenses), pre-flight briefings, post-flight debriefings, landing fees, comprehensive insurance, fuel at the home base, fuel taxes, technical maintenance, and use of facilities. So you’re paying for a fully all-inclusive package.

What is not included: the medical examination, theory and practical exams, the English Language Proficiency certificate, occasional landing fees when flying to other locations, and unforeseen fuel surcharges.

Can I study at my own pace?

Yes. Toran offers three learning tracks for the theoretical training. The intensive track is ideal if you want to progress quickly: three times a week for 4 months. The standard track spreads the training over 10 months with one lesson per week. Those who prefer to work at their own pace can opt for distance learning with a minimum of 10 hours of guided instruction.

For the practical lessons, you schedule individually with an instructor. Someone is available 7 days a week from Kortrijk, Antwerp, Knokke, and Sint-Truiden.
